Tips For Creating the Life of Your Dreams
What if someone told you that you were going to spend a lifetime on a giant rock floating through space.
You’re told there is no guarantee how many years you would get there, and once you die it’s over. But in the mean time, you get an abundance of opportunities for happiness. You get to choose just about everything about your lifetime on this rock- where you live, the job you have, and what you do every day.
Sounds pretty cool right?
You probably pieced together that by giant rock I mean Earth and I’m definitely talking about the life you’re living right now.
There are about a million things beyond your control throughout your life. In the grand scheme of things though, you are entirely control of the life you live. You are capable of creating the life of your dreams.
It definitely cannot happen overnight. Goals take time to build on and dreams take a bit of dreaming before you watch them become a reality.
But you can start right now. You can start taking steps to move towards the life that life. Here are a few tips on how to get there:
As you read through, I highly recommend you use a journal to keep track of your thoughts. If typing works better for you, that works too, but being able to write down your thoughts and look back on them later will be super helpful.
What Do You Want?
Imagine Your Dream Life:
Imagine your picture perfect life. Don’t think about money or other logistics of it, for right now just imagine it as good as it can be. When you close your eyes and see this life, what does it look like?
Pay attention to where you are and what you’re doing in this dream life. At first thought, does your dream job come to mind, or do you see yourself frocliking on the beach first? Do you crave freedom, or does the drive for success fulfill you more?
When you let yourself fully imagine the life of your dreams, which aspects does your mind prioritize?
Let yourself daydream. Write down in a journal these pieces that make your dream life- the house you want to live in, the job you want to have, the way you want to see the world. Make mood boards- either physical photos, Pinterest boards, or whatever seems the most fun.
Start dreaming- and dream big.
Make a List of Your Greatest Goals in Life:
What do you want to accomplish in this life?
A successful life can be anything from winning a Nobel Prize, raising a family you love, to just living a happy life and doing everything on your bucket list.
Think about what success looks like for your life, and write down some of these goals you have.
And a List of Your Smaller Goals Too:
Pick a somewhat short timeline, like in the next year or maybe a few, and think about what you want to accomplish within that.
Maybe you want to get into your dream school or get a promotion at your job. Or maybe it’s your goal to start a family or buy your first home. Maybe you want to learn a new skill or finally overcome that bad habit.
Whatever goals you have, write them down.
Then Do the Same With a Life-Long Bucket List:
Make a bucket list of everything you can think of that you want to do in this life. Not necessarily goals, but the things you want to try, experiences you want to have, and places you want to see.
Include things both big and things that seem a bit smaller too, but think everything you want to do in this life.

And a Smaller Scale Bucket List Too:
Aside from your life-long bucket list, make one for a smaller time frame like the next few months, year, or even few years- whatever feels right to you.
For example, if you’re still in school consider making a bucket list of everything you want to do before you graduate.
Think of the things and places you dream about, and make that list for the things that make sense for your life right now in whatever stage of life you’re in.
What Makes You Feel Alive?
When do you feel most like yourself?
What moments fill you up with joy and make you think, “oh yeah, this is why I love living,”?
The feeling of freedom running by the shoreline at the beach, the relief and accomplishment of solving a problem or building something, the adrenaline of climbing a mountain or playing the sport you love, whatever it is.
Make note of these moments where you feel most of life, and keep them in mind when imagining your dream life. Think about what exactly makes you feel so good in these moments, and imagine how you carry this feeling over into other areas of your life.
Look at Your Life Now:
What Makes You the Happiest?
Think about which parts of your current life bring you the most happiness and the things you look forward to most as you move through your day.
Knowing you’re going to see your friends later gets you through the work day or maybe you spend the whole day dreaming about that sunset hike you have planned.
Think about all the little things that bring joy into your life. Think of a few little ways you can bring more of those things in your life. Maybe just by planning a minimum of 3 sunset hikes a week can boost your happiness by miles and miles.
Really small, almost effortless changes can have huge, everlasting changes in your life. Making these little changes to bring more happiness into your life will push you towards that dream life.
What Parts of Your Life Bring You Down:
Now look at your day to day life some more and think about the parts that bring you down. Is there anything you do that puts a pit in your stomach just thinking about it?
If something came to mind, try and figure out why it makes you feel this way.
There are a lot of things in life that are non-negotiable and you just have to do them like going to school and sitting through driver’s ed. There’s some things you can’t avoid, but pay attention to these pieces that you don’t love and what aspects of them make you feel like this.
If the worst part about school is sitting still in a classroom all day, then an office job might be a bad call for your future.
Who in Your Life Makes You Feel the Most Supported?
Now think about the people in your life. Who makes you feel the most supported and loved? Who are you around when you feel the most comfortable and free to be fully yourself? Are there people in your life that bring out the best sides of you? Maybe you
These are the people to surround yourself with.
As you move throughout your life and go on to live in new places with new people, keep these positive people in mind. When it comes to making new friends look for these positive friendships that bring love and light into your life.
Then Think of The People Who Make You Feel the Opposite:
Maybe you have that one friend who makes you feel insecure. They say things that make you feel bad about yourself or leave you out a little too often.
Or maybe you have people in your life who bring out the not so great parts of you. Maybe you gossip a lot with them or make bad decisions when you hangout.
Your perception of the world and the way you look at and go about your life is greatly influenced by your experiences and the people and things around you, so keep this in mind when choosing who to hangout with.
Start Making Small Changes
Start Crossing Things Off Your Bucket List as Often as Possible
Sometimes bucket lists, especially the life-long ones, can feel like “one day” things. They feel far out and you assume that one day you will just magically complete everything on there.
Timing is definitely important, and you shouldn’t put pressure on yourself to complete everything now. Money flows and schedules change throughout your life, and that’s okay.
But also remember that this is your bucket list and you are in control of completing it. Start crossing things off whenever you can.
The items on your bucket list are the things you dream of and the things that make you feel alive. So the more you do them, the more positive memories you will have.
Adventure will begin flowing into your life and you will bring yourself closer to the life of your dreams.
Set Realistic Goals For Yourself
Back to those short-term goals you were thinking about, write them down and create attainable steps to help you get there.
Decide on a time you want to complete this by, or if it makes more sense to set it within a time frame, that’s okay too.
Take the Steps to Move Towards Your Dreams
If you’ve always had that secret dream of being a musician and creating music, pick up a guitar or whatever instrument you want, and just start.
When you thought of that dream life, if you imagined a life of travel, start putting away money so you can save up to do so. Also consider practicing a second language to help you get around easier. Hold yourself accountable to these things by committing to save x amount of money each month and practicing that language for x amount of time each day.
Your life won’t change overnight. You can’t learn a new skill in an hour or magically have the life of your dreams the second you decide you want it. It starts with baby steps- small changes that lead to huge impacts over time.
